Game Report: Boys Basketball – East Forsyth vs Southwest Guilford

The Cowboys of Southwest played hosts to the Eagles of East Forsyth in a conference clash. The Eagles are riding an 8 game winning streak into the Ranch, while the Cowboys are seeming to put things together with 2 consecutive victories. Both teams come into tonight’s match-up unbeaten in conference play.

The game began with both teams struggling to put the ball in the basket. After several empty trips by both teams, the Eagles got on the board with a 3 pointer at the 5:52 mark. The teams traded baskets until a 6-0 spurt by the Cowboys gave them an early lead at 10-6. The teams traded baskets again until a late basket by the Cowboys gave them the early lead at the end of the quarter at 18-13.

The second quarter was owned by the Eagles. More specifically Drew Cone who scored 15 of his 17 first half points in the quarter. The Eagles took control of the game, yet the Cowboys remained in the game. The lone highlight of the quarter was KJ Langley’s 3 point basket early in the frame that gave 1,000 points on his career. Once again a late basket by the Cowboys helped their cause. Headed into the half the visiting Eagles were up 34-32.

The Cowboys came out of the break and had several looks on their opening possession but never got one to go, and true to form, the Eagles came down and hit another 3 to give them the 37-32 advantage. Slowly the Cowboys see-sawed the game back into their favor and even took a 44-42 lead. The teams traded baskets and a well executed play just before the buzzer had a 3 ball drop for the Cowboys giving them a 49-47 edge headed into the final stanza.

This time it was the Cowboys who drilled a 3 to open the frame which gave them a 52-47 lead. Southwest was able to get the lead up to 56-49, but a 3 chance possession by the Eagles that finally scored a basket to make it 56-51 at the 6 minute mark seemed to keep the fight alive in the Eagles. The Cowboys seemed to seize control with a few defensive stops and some baskets, but the final final 2 minutes turned out to be filled with drama. The Cowboys were up 60-55, but just under the 2 minute mark, the Eagles put 2 baskets together to make it 60-59.

A wild sequence that included an Eagles miss, Cowboys Miss, offensive rebound, turnover then steal again all in the Eagles backcourt until the ball got poked under the basket for an easy layup gave the Cowboys a 62-59 lead at 1:40. The ensuing Eagles possession only scored a single free-throw to make it 62-60. The Eagles began to foul Southwest, but had fouls to give before reaching the bonus. After a second foul, the Cowboys turned the ball over trying to inbounds the ball with 1:11 to play. The Eagles called time out.

Following the timeout Southwest was able to swarm the ball and force a turnover of their own. Southwest hit both free-throws following the foul making it 64-60 with 46 seconds to go. East Forsyth missed a contested shot and Southwest was fouled following the rebound. The Cowboy missed the front end of the one-and-one, but Southwest came up with an offensive rebound and was fouled.

This time the Cowboys made the front end but missed the second giving them a 65-60 advantage with 27 seconds to go. East was able to drive the ball and was fouled and made both freebies to cut the margin to 65-62 with 24 seconds to go. Southwest struggled from the line missing both free-throws giving East another shot as they pushed the ball in transition but missed another contested deep shot. Southwest once again was fouled, and once again missed both free-throws to seal it.

East pushed the ball and was fouled. A time out was called following the missed first free-throw. The Eagles attempt to get the offensive rebound worked but only managed a put back at the buzzer to slim the final margin to 65-64.

The Cowboys come out still unbeaten in Conference play.

The Eagles were led by Drew Cone with 19. Southwest was led by Kaymon Mitchell with 20, 7 Rebs, 5 Asts, Kameron Langley with 15, 5 Asts, 4 Rebs, 4 Stls, and KJ Langley with 12.
