College Men’s Basketball News – Guilford’s McCarthy Takes Second Straight ODAC Player of the Week Award

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College senior Matt McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) earned his second straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Award Monday. McCarthy is Guilford’s first recipient of the award in consecutive weeks since Tyler Sanborn ‘10 in February 2010.

McCarthy, a 6-2 senior shooting guard, averaged 29.5 points and 6.0 three-pointers per game in the Quakers’ two conference wins last week. He shot over 52 percent from the floor and 48 percent from three-point land. McCarthy poured in a league- and career-high 44 points in Guilford’s double-overtime victory at Emory & Henry College Jan. 28. The two-time All-ODAC pick rallied the Quakers from a 12-point deficit with 24 second-half points and then scored 13 of the Quakers’ 21 points in the two overtime periods. Through games of Feb. 1, his 44 points in a game ranks sixth among NCAA Division III leaders.

On Jan. 31, McCarthy netted all of his 15 points in the first half of Guilford’s 64-48 ODAC win over Eastern Mennonite University. He hit five of eight three-pointers in the half, which he helped the Quakers to their sixth straight victory.

McCarthy averages a club-high 16.5 points per game, the ODAC’s fourth-highest figure. He leads the league with 3.5 three-pointers per game and ranks fourth in steals (1.9 spg.). McCarthy also stands among the ODAC leaders in free-throw percentage (.823, 3rd), assists (2.9 apg., 10th), and minutes (30.8 mpg, 4th). McCarthy ranks eighth among NCAA Division III leaders with 66 three-pointers made and 11th in three-pointers per game.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers (15-4, 8-2 ODAC) start the week in a share of second place in the league standings. Guilford visits Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday (2/4) for a 7:00 p.m. league contest and travels to Shenandoah University Saturday (2/7) for a 2:00 p.m. game.
