Elon Softball Duo Earns CAA Weekly Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – Freshmen Kiandra Mitchum and Hannah Olson of the Elon University softball team were rewarded as the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Mitchum earned two wins in her first two career starts last weekend against USC Upstate and Radford. The Mechanicsville, Va., native gave up only one up while fanning two batters in a complete-game effort in the Phoenix’s 4-3 win over the Spartans on Saturday, Feb. 7. She followed that performance with a five-inning effort against Radford on Sunday, Feb. 8, as she gave up only one run, unearned, in the maroon and gold’s 6-1 victory over the Highlanders. She ended the weekend with a 1.75 ERA in her 12.0 innings of action.

Olson led the Phoenix in hitting with a .500 batting average (5-for-10) while scoring six runs and stealing three bases over the weekend. The Yorktown, Va., native scored twice in each of the Phoenix’s three games, including the game-winning run in the eighth inning over Radford on Saturday, Feb. 7, in Elon’s 6-5 victory. She also drew a pair of hit-by-pitches.

Elon travels to Athens, Ga., this Friday, Feb. 13, to compete in the Bulldog Invitational, hosted by the University of Georgia. The Phoenix opens the tournament against Troy at 10 a.m. followed by a contest with 12th-ranked Georgia at 5:30 p.m.
