Elon WLAX Phoenix Plays First Road Contest Saturday at Longwood

ELON, N.C. – After two straight home games, the Elon women’s lacrosse team (1-1) plays its first road game of the season when it visits Longwood (0-1) on Saturday, Feb. 14, for a 1 p.m. start in Farmville, Va.

Looking Back
The Phoenix hosted its first Atlantic Coast Conference and ranked opponent in its last game against No. 8 Duke last Saturday. The Blue Devils claimed the 18-7 victory but the Phoenix outscored the visitors, 6-5, in the second half. Sloane Kessler, Molly Garrigan and Stephanie Asher all finished with two scores on the day, while Kessler also recorded two assists. Goalie Rachel Ramirez posted 12 saves for a 41.4 save percentage on the day.

A Look at the Lancers
Longwood opened its 2015 season last Sunday with a 17-2 setback at Navy. Lancer goalie and Big South All-Preseason team selection Christian Acker recorded 10 saves, while the team’s goals came from Sarah Butler and Sarah Arndt. The Lancers finished third in the Big South last season.

The Series
Elon holds the 1-0 advantage in the series after a 15-4 victory over the Lancers on March 19 of last year in Rhodes Stadium. Anna Vitton led the Phoenix with four goals, while both Olivia Fernandez and Sloane Kessler netted three scores with Kessler also tallying two assists. Elle Hvozdovic claimed seven of the maroon and gold’s seven draw controls and Rachel Ramirez picked up a game-high six ground balls.

Next Up
The Phoenix travels south to visit two former Atlantic Sun Conference opponents next weekend. Elon takes on reigning A-Sun champion Jacksonville on Friday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. before facing Stetson on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m.
