HPU’s Julia Burns named Big South WLAX Defensive Player of the Week

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University women’s lacrosse goalkeeper Julia Burns has been named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

It marks the second time that Burns has earned the weekly award in her career. The honor includes games played Feb. 16-22.

Burns registered a career-high 15 saves while allowing just six goals to lead High Point to a strong 10-6 win over ACC foe Virginia Tech on Friday (Feb. 20). Burns posted a .714 save percentage and deflected free position shot after free position shot, as the Hokies were just 2-of-12 (.167) in FPS attempts on the day.

With HPU leading 5-4 at the break, Burns allowed just two goals in the second half while making seven saves in the deciding period in which HPU held a 5-3 scoring margin. The six goals scored by Virginia Tech were a season low for the Hokies.

This season, the junior ranks second in the national in saves (49) and is fifth in saves per game (12.25).

Burns and the Panthers return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against UMBC inside Vert Stadium.
