College Men’s Tennis Final – Guilford 5, Averett 4

DANVILLE, Va. – Turner Votipka’s victory at first singles clinched the Saturday afternoon match win for Guilford College over Averett University, 5-4.

The Quakers (1-2) claimed all two of the three doubles victories, including the third doubles tandem of Levi Ruff and Mesa Martoell claiming a victory over Averett’s Rustam Aliev and Bradley Hedges, 8-1.

Votipka claimed the first-singles victory over James Wright after dropping the first set, 3-6. The senior roared back in the second set, 6-1, before claiming the third set, 10-5, to seal the Quakers’ match victory.

Aaron Smedley claimed victory in the fifth singles match against the Cougars’ Aliev with a two set sweep, 6-2 and 6-1. Mason Church earned the sixth-singles match sweep over Hedges, 6-0 and 6-0, to round the Quakers’ singles triumphs.

Averett claimed three singles victories, including Nic Quevedo’s three-set win over Trevor Cox (6-4, 2-6, 10-8).

The Quakers return to the court Thursday, hosting Ferrum College at 1:30 p.m. at the McMichael Centennial Class Courts.
