GREENSBORO, N.C. – Herc Ingels and Chuck Noble each drove in three runs a piece as Guilford College picked up a Wednesday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Emory & Henry College, 8-5.
The Quakers (4-7, 1-2 ODAC) pulled away from Emory & Henry (1-6, 0-1 ODAC) in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a six-run rally after the contest remained tight in the prior innings. Emory & Henry added four unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined to chip away at the deficit before Guilford’s Justin Morrison (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian) entered the contest with two outs in the top of the eighth frame to shut the door.
Noble finished the afternoon 3-for-5, producing doubles for all of his hits while totaling three RBI. Ingels went 2-for-5 with three RBI, all coming on a two-out single in the six-run fifth inning after a wild pitch and a walk loaded the bases. Nathan Fulbright collected the remaining Guilford RBI, batting 1-for-5 on the afternoon.
Emory & Henry’s Brandon Lineberry led the Wasps, batting 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, and two RBI. Brandon Whitaker and Matthew Whisnant collected one RBI a piece while each hitting 2-for-4.
Darin Salter (2-0) claimed the win after a six-inning effort where he held the Wasps to one run on eight hits while fanning three batters. Josh Bishop threw the seventh inning and gave up one earned run on two hits while striking out one batter. Lou Trosch pitched for two-thirds of the eighth inning, striking out one while giving up two runs on four hits. Morrison earned his first save of the season, throwing a perfect one and one-third inning while striking out one.
Austin Kiser (0-1) took the loss for the Wasps, throwing four and one-third innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits while walking three and fanning one. Garrett Butler threw the next two and one-third innings surrendering three runs on two hits, walking four, and striking out one. Dakota Grizzel and Matthew McInaw each threw two-thirds of a inning a piece with Grizzel walking one.
The Quakers return to the diamond Saturday, hosting Virginia Wesleyan College for an ODAC doubleheader beginning at noon.
