College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 16, Centre 15 (ot)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Eleanora Keene scored her career-high seventh goal in overtime to help Guilford College to a 16-15 lacrosse win over visiting Centre College Sunday.

Keene scored 31 seconds into the extra-frame on a free-position shot to break a 14-14 tie. She won the ensuing draw control, which ultimately led to Demming Carlow’s goal that gave the Quakers a 16-14 edge. Kira Buss’s set up Carlow’s fourth goal of the game with a nifty pass into the crease, which was her career-high third assist.

The Colonels (2-5) cut the deficit to one on Andrea Wambaugh’s third goal of the game off a Colleen Jackson feed with 2:40 left in overtime. While Guilford won the ensuing draw, possession swung back and forth in the remaining time due to turnovers. Neither team fired a shot in the final 2:40.

Keene sparked Guilford’s big second-half comeback, which saw the Quakers (3-3) overcome two seven-goal deficits. Centre’s Jacqueline Anderson scored her third goal of the game off a free-position shot with 22:48, which gave the Colonels a 12-5 edge. Keene answered less than two minutes later, which triggered a 9-1 Quakers run that gave Guilford a 14-13 lead with 8:22 left in regulation. Keene netted five goals and Guilford won seven of 10 draws during the decisive spurt.

After Keene’s go-ahead goal, Centre answered with an Aubrey Powers tally that ultimately forced overtime. Both squads had good scoring opportunities in regulation’s final seven minutes, including a Jackson shot with seven seconds left that hit the crossbar and a Haden Gibbons free-position shot that sailed high six seconds earlier.

In addition to her career-high seven scores, Keene picked up a game-high 10 draws and five ground balls. Carlow finished with four goals and had five draw controls. Taylor Campellone and Marina Bailey both tallied twice for the Quakers. Carter MacLeod added a game- and career-high six assists. Sammi Milbourn made five saves and had four ground balls after relieving Sarah Sedaghat midway through the first half.

Wambaugh, Anderson and Powers each scored three times for Centre. Powers added two assists for a team-high five points. Anderson and Ellen Resinger were two of three Colonels who left the game in the second half with injuries. Resinger had two goals, one assist, four draws and two caused turnovers before her injury. Anderson contributed three scores, four draws and three ground balls before leaving the game. Natalie Marek made 15 saves in goal for Centre, 10 in the first half, which helped the visitors build a 7-0 lead.

Coach Sarah Lamphier’s Quakers return to action Saturday (3/25) at Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Virginia Wesleyan College.
