HPU Women’s Golf Finish Second At Cape Fear National Womens Intercollegiate

LELAND, N.C. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot a combined 311 in the second and final round of the Cape Fear National Womens Intercollegiate on Monday in Leland, N.C., and finished in second out of six teams with a total score of 630.

“The team played better today, but still wasn’t great in the decision making department,” head coach Vici Pate Flescher said. “Knowing that it was close they played the last hole very well with two birdies, two pars and a bogey. I was happy how they handled the pressure. I’m looking forward to this coming weekend at Hilton Head. I am confident that they will show improvement.”

Sophomore Danielle Fuss and freshman Cayla Smith both were named to the All-Tournament team after registering top-five finishes in the event. Fuss shot a four-over 76 to finish in third with a total score of 154 (78-76). Smith had the Panthers’ low round of the day with a 75 to move into fourth with a 36-hole score of 155 (80-75).

Junior Casey Ward also finished amongst the top 10 in the individual standings in a tie for eighth with a score of 158 after shooting 79 for the second-straight round. Junior Tan Cheeranont (82-81) and senior Grier Bennett (82-81) finished in a tie for 16th with matching scores of 163.

Host Appalachian State claimed the team title with a combined team score of 626 (316-310). IUPUI finished in third with a two-round score of 632 while Gardner-Webb finished in fourth with a score of 633. The Citadel (667) and Mercyhurst (733) rounded out the team standings.

The Mountaineers’ Savanna Wood earned the individual medal with a 36-hole score of 150 (74-76). Aneta Abrahamova finished one-stroke back of Wood in second place with a score of 151 (76-75).

High Point returns to action this weekend when the team heads to Hilton Head, S.C., to play in the Low Country Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at the Moss Creek Golf Club beginning on Saturday, March 21.
