HPU Baseball Picks Up 7-4 Win At Longwood

• High Point earned a 7-4 win on the road at Longwood in the first game of a three-game weekend series.
• Seniors Spencer Angelis and Josh Spano and sophomore Josh Greene all hit home runs in the win for HPU.
• The three home run for the Panthers are the most in a game since May 22, 2010 against Charleston Southern.

FARMVILLE, Va. – The High Point University baseball team opened the weekend with a 7-4 win over Longwood on Friday night in Farmville, Va. The Panthers had three home runs in the game to take a 1-0 lead in the weekend series.

“I think tonight was a great example of how to figure out a way to win a baseball game,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “We had three home runs in a game for the first time in a long time, all in the final four innings. That is a great way to start the weekend. I am excited that the guys fought and found a way to get a win.”

Senior John McGillicuddy earned his third-straight win to improve to 3-3 on the season. McGillicuddy pitched six innings and gave up two earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Redshirt-junior Joe Goodman pitched the final 2-1/3 innings to earn his first save in 2015. Goodman allowed one hit and two walks while striking out one.

Aaron Myers took the loss for the Lancers, dropping to 3-4 on the season. Myers gave up six earned runs on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts. The six runs surrendered by Myers are the most that the right-hander has allowed in a game this season.

High Point improves to 13-11 overall and 3-1 in the Big South with the win, its third-straight. Longwood drops to 10-14 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

High Point took a quick 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Freshman Hunter Lee walked to leadoff the game and came around to score on a groundout to short by senior Spencer Angelis.

Longwood came back to tie the game at 1-1 with a run in the second. Connar Bastaich walked to leadoff the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch from McGillicuddy.

The Lancers went ahead by a 2-1 score with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Coltan Konvicka led off the inning with a triple and came home on an RBI double by Travis Biddix.

Sophomore Josh Greene connected for his team-best fifth home run in the sixth inning to put High Point back in front by a score of 3-2. Jackson reached with a two-out single ahead of Greene. The sophomore went the other way and hit a two-run shot over the wall in left-center to put HPU in front. The home run was Greene’s second in as many games.

High Point added to its lead one inning later with a two-run home run by senior Josh Spano, his second of the season. Senior Tony Fortier-Bensen reached on a single and scored when Spano turned on a 1-0 pitch and hit it well over the wall in left.

After Longwood scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull to within one, High Point came right back with two runs in the top of the eighth to extend its lead to 7-4. Angelis led off the frame with a solo home run to left, his second of the season. Greene then scored on an RBI groundout by Fortier-Bensen after reaching on an error.

The three home runs by the Panthers are the most in a game by High Point since May 22, 2010 when HPU connected for three home runs in a win over Charleston Southern. Greene finished 2-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored, Angelis went 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Spano went 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Brandon Harvell went 3-4 in the game for the Lancers and Biddix finished 2-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

High Point and Longwood continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday, March 28, in Farmville, Va. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
