LYNCHBURG, Va. – Guilford College used six runs in the final two innings to turn a one-run game into a wide margin in a Tuesday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Lynchburg College, 11-4.
Guilford (8-17, 4-10 ODAC) took advantage of five Lynchburg (7-14, 3-4 ODAC) errors to create five un-earned runs in the contest, which began in the top of the third inning when an error sparked a three-run rally which amassed a four-run Quaker lead. Lynchburg responded with a run and loaded the bases before starting pitcher Darin Salter induced a fielder’s choice to stranded the Hornets at every base.
Lynchburg combined to strand nine runners from the third to sixth inning in spite of producing their most offense in these middle innings. The Quakers would make the Hornets pay, posting six un-answered runs in the final two innings to create distance from the Hornets on the way to victory.
The top third of the Quakers’ batting order combined for six RBI, two a piece for Herc Ingels, Kyle Humphrey (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth), and Josh Shepherd. The trio combined to bat 7-for-16 with Ingels and Shepherd doubling once. Chuck Noble finished 4-for-5 with a double in the clean-up spot in the lineup, joining Ingels as one of two players with four hits on the afternoon.
Lynchburg’s Johnathan Munn was one of only two Hornets with a multi-hit effort, batting 4-for-4 while Joe Rogers finished 2-for-4 with a double.
Salter threw the first four innings and gave up two un-eanred runs on five hits while walking two and fanning one. Avery Rogers threw the next two innings and gave up two runs on four hits while walking and striking out one. Drew Martin (1-0) claimed the win in two scoreless innings of relief and three strikeouts while Justin Morrison (High Point, N.C/High Point Christian) shut the door in the ninth inning while striking out one.
David Goulding (1-1) took the loss, giving up six runs (three un-earned) on 11 hits in seven innings. Reid Goss and Charlie Thieringer combined to surrender five runs (two un-earned) on seven hits while Thieringer fanned four.
The Quakers continue their road schedule tomorrow, traveling to Averett University for a 3 p.m. contest.
