College Women’s Tennis Final – #5 Washington and Lee 5, Guilford 3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fifth-ranked Washington and Lee University brought just four competitors to Sunday’s women’s tennis match at Guilford College and left with a 5-3 victory over the Quakers in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match played at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. The Generals (17-4, 9-0 ODAC) are ranked fifth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Division III Poll and second in the Atlantic South region.

Washington and Lee forfeited points at third doubles, fifth singles and sixth singles, but still had enough firepower to turn back Guilford in straight sets in the remaining five matches. The fourth-singles tilt was not finished.

Washington and Lee’s Megan Buell, the 22nd-ranked player in the latest ITA’s Division III Atlantic South Rankings, downed Haley Andrews at first singles, 6-0, 6-1, and teamed with Genny Francis for an 8-0 win over Guilford’s Fernanda Gonzalez and Nora Prokosch at second doubles.

The Generals’ Michelle Fleenor won her second-singles contest against Allison Hewitt, 6-0, 6-1, and teamed with Kelsey Vella for an 8-3 first-doubles win over Hewitt and Andrews.

Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers finished the 2015 season with a 6-9 overall record, 3-8 in the ODAC.
