College Softball Final: Roanoke 5, Guilford 4

SALEM, Va. – Jordan Meador hit a second-inning grand slam for Roanoke College as Guilford College saw their season draw to a close by the hands of Roanoke, 5-4, Saturday Morning in day two of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Guilford jumped to a 3-0 lead after one and a half innings, gaining momentum in the inning after two quick outs were posted. On three consecutive at-bats, the Quakers managed to bring one run across each time, gaining a sizable early lead. Roanoke immediately countered, using a pair of walks and a single to set up Meador for the grand slam.

Roanoke added an insurance run in the third, but a key defensive play at home plate off an error and a ground out induced by reliever Ashley Boteler forced two Maroons to remain at base to close the third frame. The Quakers answered with one run in the third and had two players reach base in the top of the seventh inning, but Roanoke retired the side.

Four different Quakers claimed one RBI a piece, including Caroline Barnette who was one of two Quakers with multiple hits on the morning with a 2-for-4 effort. Calli Pastor also drove in a run while batting 2-for-3 and Casey Snead collected the Quakers’ only extra-base hit, a double, in her only at-bat.

Meador finished the morning as the only Maroon with multiple hits, batting 2-for-3 including the second inning grand slam. The top half of the Maroon order combined for three of Roanoke’s six hits.

Snead (4-4) took the loss for the Quakers, giving up five runs (one un-earned) on four hits while walking two in two innings. Boteler threw the final four innings and gave up only two hits in the redshirt-senior’s final appearance.

Kelly Higbie (14-11) claimed the complete-game win for Roanoke, striking out two and walking one batter.
