NCHSAA State 4-A Boy’s Tennis Championships – 1st Day

WAKE COUNTY PLAYERS DOMINATE IN NCHSAA 4-A TENNIS; CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRINGS SET

RALEIGH – Wake County tennis players excelled on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s tennis championships at the Millbrook Exchange Park.

Three of the four semifinalists in singles and three of the four doubles teams in the semis hailed from Wake County, with some previous champions playing very well. Tournament officials elected to play three rounds on Friday with the threat of some inclement weather on Saturday.

Nick Stachowiak of Apex Middle Creek, who was the 2013 4-A singles titlist, will face Clayton’s Klein Evans for the championship. Stachowiak did not lose a single game in his first two victories and then ousted Nico Grewe of Raleigh Wakefield in the semifinals by 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, the Wakefield duo of Bo Boyden and Martin will battle Raleigh Millbrook’s Austin Cobb and Josiah Schainblatt for the championship. Boyden was the singles runner-up to Stachowiak in 2013 and won the singles crown last year, but this year elected to play doubles in this tournament.

Boyden suffered a badly turned ankle in the quarterfinal, received treatment and then he and Martin won their semifinal by 6-3, 6-1 over the team of Jack Oldis and Henry Enochs of Greensboro Page.

Action is scheduled to start Saturday morning at nine o’clock.
