#13 College of Charleston Hands Elon Baseball First Loss of CAA Tournament:Casey Jones(WG) bright spot for Phoenix/Blake Butler(SEG) for COC

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Elon baseball team suffered its first setback of the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament on Thursday night at Phoenix dropped a 9-0 decision to 13th-ranked, and top-seeded, College of Charleston at Patriots Point.

Elon fell to 25-28 on the season, while the Cougars improved to 42-11.

Casey Jones(Western Guilford High School) recorded two of Elon’s three hits, including a ninth-inning double.

For Charleston, Ryan Brown was 3-for-3 with a homer, double, two runs scored and two RBI.

Making his first appearance since April 11, Michael Elefante (3-1) took the loss for Elon. He allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings.

Taylor Clarke (13-1) picked up the win for the Cougars. He went 8.2 innings, striking out 10 and not allowing a walk.

Up next: The Phoenix will look to avoid elimination with a 10 a.m. game against fifth-seeded Delaware on Friday.

How it happened: Charleston’s Brown led off the last of the first with a double down the right field line. With two down, he scored on Blake Butler’s single down the same line. Up 2-0 in the fifth, the Cougars tacked on a trio of runs on homers from Morgan Phillips and Brown.

Inside the box score: Elon had just one runner advance past first base.

Notes: Jones’ ninth-inning double was the 47th of his career, moving him in to a tie for sixth in program history.
