American Legion Baseball Is Back in Greensboro

Legion Ball is back. After over a decade, the first ball was pitched by a Greensboro American Legion team.

Thanks to the vision of Ken “kenny” Mackovic the manager of the new American Legion team and many others, history was made tonight(Tuesday).

“I want to thank American Legion Post 386 for stepping up to the plate and sponsoring us. I feel the young men can learn a lot from this tremendous organization and from its members who have sacrificed so much serving our great nation. Talk about American heroes!”

So far, the team is comprised of athletes from the area, including Page High School that is hosting the home games. Head Coach is Shawn Hawk and Assistant Head Coach is Phil Giurintano. Also volunteering to get the league up and running, Jeff Shell stated, “it is critical that these athletes have something at this age to broaden there experience and take competition levels up a notch.”

The Bombers lost their first game to the Hitoms. Coach Hawk commented, “i M proud of the team. Legion ball is about as close to playing pro ball without pre- season. The schedule is rigorous and intense – the games are almost the only option where the athletes get to practice as a team.”

  1. This is really great. Greensboro has alot of talent within the area. In a few years hopefully the players will remain here instead of heading out of the county to play.

  2. Is there a roster list for this team? I hope they can keep it going.

If I recall correctly the last Greensboro legion team actually played their games at Ragsdale in Jamestown. They were pretty good. This would have been early 2000s. I know several Ragsdale kids played – Chad Baker, Gator Lankford, Jake Kensmoe, JK Whited. I remember Charlie Gamble from S. Guilford too. Not sure which AL Post sponsored them.

  3. You are right — that Legion team was very good (Post 53, maybe?) Jason Simmons and Todd Wirt were two of the coaches
