Gesell’s Gem Paves Way for 9-0 Victory

HiToms defeat visiting Holly Springs Salamanders 9-0 off good hitting and great pitching

THOMASVILLE, NC, – In front of a packed house, that included local boy and girl scouts, the HiToms secured their first CPL home victory of the season. The visiting Holly Springs Salamanders (2-2) fell 9-0 to the High Point – Thomasville HiToms (2-2).

Getting the start for the HiToms tonight was Levi Gesell (Liberty University) who set the tone early by not allowing a hit until the fifth. Gesell threw seven quality shutout innings while giving up two lone hits and collecting four strikeouts along the way.

Peter Johnson’s (Presbyterian College) RBI single in the second, scoring Pete Guy (UNC Asheville), turned out to be the game winner. The HiToms would continue the pattern and score lone runs in each the third and fourth.

A four run sixth inning broke the game wide open. New pitcher Ammons would come in and not retire any of the four batters he faced. An RBI walk to Spitznagel (UNC Greensboro), a RBI single from Johnson, and a two run single from Ruedisili (Wofford) would prove to be the dagger as the lead climbed to 7.

Mac Sceroler (Southeastern Louisiana) would come in the eighth inning and relieve Gesell. Sceroler would strike the side in the eighth and got the benefit of a line drive double play in the ninth to secure the 9-0 win for the HiToms.

The HiToms will travel to Gastonia tomorrow and be back home Sunday night for a non-league game against the Kernersville Bulldogs for Festival Sunday and Church Night. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
