Class 2-A Softball, Game One: South Granville Outlasts Forbush In 11 Innings

RALEIGH — Megan White banged a run-scoring double in the the bottom of the 11th inning to drive home the winning run in a 2-1 victory over East Bend Forbush on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A softball championship series at Dail Softball Stadium on the campus of N.C. State.

White’s double off the center field fence scored Megan White, who had singled.

Forbush had loaded the bases in the 10th but failed to score.

Both teams had 10 hits on the night, with Mallory Choplin leading Forbush with three hits and Marisaa Lineberry hitting safely twice.

Erin Boone had three hits, including a double, to lead the way for South Granville and Miranda Barker, the winning pitcher for the Vikings, had the team’s other run batted in. Sydney Miller was the losing pitcher for Forbush.

South Granville is the only school that has a team seeking both the NCHSAA state baseball and softball championships. The Vikings are 24-2 and last won a state softball championship in 1998. Forbush is in the finals for the first time since 2004 and has five previous state championships, including two when the sport was slow pitch. The Falcons are now 27-2.

Game two in the best of three series is set for Saturday at 11 am, with a third game if necessary Saturday afternoon. The Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance serves as a host city sponsors for the championship.
