MIAMI — The long wait was to see Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez(Greensboro Grasshoppers/Miami Marlins) pitch. But Fernandez energized the crowd with his bat during Thursday’s 5-4 win over the Giants.
Fernandez, returning from Tommy John surgery, ignited Marlins Park with a home run off San Francisco’s Matt Cain to lead off the fifth inning. The drive to left field prompted chants of “Jose! Jose! Jose!” in what became a four-run inning. The last pitcher to homer in his first game back after Tommy John surgery was the Cubs’ Kerry Wood on May 2, 2000. He went deep off Houston’s Jose Lima.
