Elon’s Jegier Tabbed CAA MSOC Rookie of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University men’s soccer redshirt freshman keeper Matthew Jegier was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday, Aug. 31.

In his first two career starts between the pots this past weekend, Jegier helped aid the Phoenix backline to a pair of clean sheet victories at the John Rennie/Nike Invitational in Durham, N.C. The Charlotte, N.C., native made three saves in the maroon and gold’s 4-0 victory over DePaul in its season-opener on Friday, Aug. 28, before turning away four more shots on Sunday, Aug. 30, in Elon’s narrow 1-0 win over Saint Mary’s.

Behind Jegier and the Phoenix backline, Elon has opened the season with consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2005. The Phoenix is also 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2006.

Elon is back in action in its second early-season tournament of the year, the Courtyard by Marriott Wrightsville Beach Classic hosted by UNCW this weekend, Sept. 4-6. The Phoenix opens the tournament against Campbell on Friday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m. before closing out the weekend against North Florida on Sunday, Sept. 6, at noon.
