Siewers’ Double Leads Elon WSOC Past Chattanooga 2-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Kelly Siewers had her second-career two goal match as she scored goals in the 53rd and 84th minute leading the Elon University women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Chattanooga on Sunday, Aug. 30 at Finley Stadium on Davenport Field.

“It was a tale of two halves,” said Elon head coach Chris Neal. “We had a frustrating first half and I didn’t feel like we played well. In the second half, we asked them (Elon) to do very specific things for us. One thing was to clean up the quality of services and crosses into the box. Although we didn’t get many, we got quality, and when we did we scored two great goals.”

The Highlights
Elon (2-1) dominated possession in the first half and outshot Chattanooga (0-3) 3-2 in the stanza, but the score remained scoreless. Jill Richards had the only shot on target in the half, but it was collected by Chattanooga’s Katie Ewig.

The Phoenix got off to a strong start in the second as Susannah Anderson took a shot that missed high in the 47th minute. Elon finally made the breakthrough as Siewers scored in the 53rd minute, heading a ball into the net off a cross from the left side by Sydney Schilling.

Pressure from the Phoenix continued as Lauren McKeever and Mel Insley created some chances. Susannah Anderson’s header in the 74th minute hit the crossbar. Siewers sealed the victory with a brilliant goal. She had the perfect touch on Nyah Spearman’s cross to lob the Chattanooga goalkeeper in the 84th minute to lead Elon to a 2-0 victory.

Hanna Macaulay kept the clean sheet with a huge save in the 88th minute, denying Mckenzie Gregg’s long-ranged shot for the Mocs.
