College Men’s Soccer Final – Sewanee 1, Guilford 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sewanee’s Kyle Johnston scored the game’s only goal early in the first half, earning an early Saturday evening victory over Guilford College, 1-0.

Sewanee capitalized on an early attack in the seventh minute when Ramsey Seagle ran up the left side of the field, firing a shot that was deflected off of a save from Eric Hayes. Off the rebound, Johnston booted the ball in the net inside the six-yard box to claim the match’s only goal.

The Quakers pressed in response, firing 11 of the match’s next 12 shots leading up to the 24th minute. Both attacks calmed down in the remaining minutes of the first half, with the only two shots coming from the Tigers.

Guilford came out firing in the first five minutes of the second half, challenging the Tigers on three occaisions near the 18-yard box. The chippy second half featured 16 combined fouls and three total cards with the Quakers holding a narrow shot advantage, 5-4.

Guilford held the final shot advantage, 17-12. The Tigers held the corner kick edge, 5-3, with the Quakers holding a slight edge in fouls, 14-13.

Eric Hayes (1-1) made three saves in net for the Quakers. Will Merriman stopped seven shots for Sewanee.

The Quakers (1-1) play an exhibition match with Pfeiffer tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. inside Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center. Guilford returns to regular season action Wednesday, hosting William Peace University at 7 p.m.
