HPU Women’s Golf In Ninth At William & Mary Invitational

• High Point is placed ninth at the William & Mary Invitational after shooting a combined 311 in the opening round.
• Senior Tan Cheeranont finished the day tied for first with an opening-round 70, tying her career best score.
• Junior Danielle Fuss also shot under 80 with a score of 78.

Williamsburg, Va. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot a combined 311 in the first round of the William & Mary Invitational today in Williamsburg, Va., to finish the day ninth out of 11 teams.

“Tan played terrific in today’s opening round, with a finishing score of 70 as well as posting a couple birdies,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “I know she is anxious to get out and play again tomorrow. The rest of the team needs to settle down and relax to focus on their percentage shots.”

Senior Tan Cheeranont carded a two-under 70 in the opening round and was the Panthers’ top scorer, finishing in a first place tie. Cheeranont posted three birdies and fourteen pars through 18 holes.

Junior Danielle Fuss finished in a tie for 32nd with an opening round of 78 while sophomore Cayla Smith posted a score of 80. Freshmen Landrie Grace notched a score of 83 as freshman Jenny Zhang posted a 91 on the first day. Unfortunately freshman Patty Treevichaphan stayed out of individual play due to sickness.

UNC Wilmington leads the team race with a combined team score of 293 through 18 holes. Appalachian State closely follows with posting a combined score of 298. Eastern Kentucky (300), Presbyterian College (302), Bucknell (303), William & Mary (305), Radford (308), Western Carolina (309), High Point (311), Longwood (313), Seton Hall (314), and North Dakota State (315) round out the field.

Bucknell’s Lindsay Dodovich and Kayla Thompson of UNC Wilmington join Cheeranont in a tie for first with matching scores of 70 in the opening round. They hold a one-stroke lead over Anna Gleixner of Eastern Kentucky who carded a 71 through 18 holes.

High Point will return to the Kingsmill Resort Plantation Course on Monday, September 14, for the second of three rounds of the William & Mary Invitational.
