College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Takes 13th at Flower City Preview

PENFIELD, N.Y. – Tanner Gross shot 75 Sunday to help Guilford College’s men’s golf team placed 13th at the Flower City Preview at the Midvale Country Club. The Quakers shot 313 in Sunday’s second and final round of the rain-shortened event contested on one of the sites of the 2016 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships.

Tournament host St. John Fisher College carded a 303 in the second round and won the tournament with a 36-hole score of 604, four strokes better than runner-up Methodist University (308-300-608). First-round leader Huntingdon College finished in third place (300-311-611). St. John Fisher’s Corey Haas (72-73-145) claimed medalist honors by a stroke over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Mats Heien (71-75-146).

The Quakers trimmed three shots off their opening-round score in Sunday’s second round, but failed to climb the standings. Rookie Josh Hill had the team’s best individual finish (T33rd) with a two-round score of 77-78-155. Gross was two strokes behind his teammate in a share of 43rd position after shooting 82-75-157. Guilford’s Kendall Dunn shot 78-80-158, which tied for 46th place. Aaron Abts provided the Quakers’ fourth score Sunday and placed 67th at 83-80-163.

The preview event was scheduled for 54 holes with the teams playing 18 holes at Midvale and 18 holes at Mendon Golf Club, the other championships site. However, due to heavy rains, the teams completed one round Saturday at Midvale and started a second round on the same course. Second-round play was suspended Saturday and completed Sunday.

Coach Justin Tereshko’s Quakers, ranked eighth in the latest Bushnell Golfweek Coaches’ Poll and ninth in the current Golfstat.com Division III Relative Rankings, return to action Sept. 28-29 at the Gordin Collegiate Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
