HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University volleyball team shook off a slow start in the first set for a 3-0 victory over North Carolina A&T in the Millis Center on Tuesday night.
The Aggies (2-6) took a 19-15 lead in the first set, but the Panthers (6-6) stormed back for a 25-20 win in the frame and cruised to a straight-sets triumph.
“It was great to go out and play the way we wanted to tonight,” head coach Jason Oliver said. “We’ve been talking a lot about how we want to come out and play to our strengths and as a unit and we accomplished that tonight.”
Sophomore Camryn Freiberg led HPU’s offensive attack with 11 kills while hitting .455 for the match. Reigning HPU Female Student-Athlete of the Week, senior Annemarie Chin continued her torrent digging pace with 19 in the 3-set triumph.
Likewise, junior Megan Kennedy had a solid night racking up 10 kills and nine digs as HPU registered a 59-42 advantage in digs. Meanwhile, redshirt-junior Savannah Angel played well in the middle tallying five blocks and three kills.
North Carolina A&T and High Point were even in blocks (6-6), but the Panthers managed a .291 to .078 margin in attack percentage.
HPU struggled out of the gate falling behind 19-15. However, behind hot hitting from Freiberg, the Purple & White finished the set on a 10-1 run to take the frame 25-20. Freiberg posted seven kills in the set while Chin racked up 10 digs.
The momentum built up from the first set continued into the second frame as HPU jumped out to an 11-3 lead. From there, the Purple & White cruised to a 25-18 victory behind seven kills from Kennedy and a .324 attack percentage.
Once again, HPU leaped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set. The home squad pulled away and built a 20-8 on another kill by Freiberg. The Panthers didn’t let up and earned a 25-16 win to close out the match in straight sets.
HPU’s 9-match streak of games in the Triad ends on Friday when the Panthers play Coppin State at 4:30 p.m. in Loretto, Pa. to open the Red Flash Classic. The squad, then, plays host St. Francis (Pa.) (1:00 p.m.) and Fordham (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
