College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 1, Eastern Mennonite 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Leke Ademoyero’s (Pfafftown, N.C./Reagan) second-half goal broke the ice and gave the Guilford College an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Eastern Mennonite University, 1-0, on a hot Saturday afternoon.

Both teams kept each other scoreless in the first 20 minutes while the Quakers (4-2, 1-0 ODAC) mustered offensive chances inside the Royals’ 18-yard box, out-shooting Eastern Mennonite, 6-2, during that time frame. The Quakers narrowly missed on a couple opportunities in the middle of the half, but forced corner kicks off of the pressure. Eastern Mennonite collected a couple of offensive chances towards the end of the half to narrow the Quakers’ edge in shots, 7-5, to close the half.

Both teams traded shots in the first ten minutes of the second half before Jonny Goffredi fired a shot to the left post that was poked out by the Royals’ back line, keeping the contest scoreless. The Quakers would produce two more offensive opportunities, narrowly missing one inside the six-yard box.

Finding space inside the 18-yard box, Albion Ida and Ademoyero found space to pass back and forth before Ademoyoro finished the give-and-go by beating Matthew Overacker on the right side to put the Quakers ahead.

With 2:36 left in the contest, Eastern Mennonite’s Jackson Taylor tipped a shot that deflected off of Guilford’s Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) into the feet of Dominic Powers. With the goal wide open, Powers flicked the ball towards the goal, but Edgar Solis moved to the goal line and booted the ball away from the goal to seal the victory.

The Quakers out-shot the Royals, 16-8, and held the edge on corner kicks, 11-4. Hayes stopped one shot for the Quakers while Overacker made four saves in net for the Royals.

The Quakers return to action Wednesday, hosting North Carolina Wesleyan College for a 7 p.m. contest.
