College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, Salem 0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Casey Davis put away a match-high 18 kills on a career-best .500 hitting in Guilford College’s 3-0 volleyball win at Salem College Tuesday. The Quakers (3-8) notched their second straight win by the scores of 25-10, 25-21, 25-23.

Davis had six kills and Kelsey Ruehling added four in the opening set, which saw Guilford hit .250 as a team, while the Spirits (2-7) hit -.107 as a team.

Salem bounced back to take a 7-1 edge in the second set, but the Quakers rallied to take a 10-9 lead behind strong serving by Ruehling and Marinda Popp. The second set featured five of the match’s 13 ties. Maile Munro notched 12 of her match-best 36 assists in the second set.

The third set proved the most exciting as the teams played closely and had seven draws and two lead changes. The Spirits had a 25-20 edge before Guilford rallied to score the match’s final five points. Davis had seven kills and no errors in 12 attempts (.583). She had two kills in the match-clinching run.

Ruehling added eight kills, four service aces and 12.5 points. Steffi Dutton paced Guilford with 13 digs and Brooke Herr added 11 pickups. Munro had three service aces in addition to her 36 assists.
Kylie Taffer’s eight kills and match-high three blocks paced the hosts. Brandy Bednorz had 13 assists and nine digs.

Coach Emily Gann’s Quakers host Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Bridgewater College Saturday (9/26) at 12 noon in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
