College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 2, Hampden-Sydney 1

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Two Guilford College penalty-kick goals propelled the Quakers to a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Hampden-Sydney College, 2-1.

Liam Hogan scored the match’s first goal on the first shot of the contest, in the fifth minute to put the Tigers ahead. In a game where shots were few, Guilford (5-3, 2-0 ODAC) followed with the match’s next four shots up until the 27th minute when the Tigers countered with three shots of their own.

A mad scramble in the box in the 37th minute set up the Quakers next key opportunity when an Edgar Solis shot that was saved by Hampden-Sydney’s Cameron McFarlane produced a rebound that resulted in a blocked shot struck by a Hampden-Sydney hand, forcing a penalty kick. Jake Elsey struck the following attempt into the net near the end of the 37th minute to even the score.

After halftime, Hampden-Sydney posted the only two shots of the second half until the 79th minute when an attempted shot hit a Hampden-Sydney player in the hand while on the ground. Corey McDonough converted on the Quakers’ second penalty-kick goal of the match, the first shot of the period for Guilford, to take the lead.

Hampden-Sydney narrowly out-shot the Quakers, 10-9. Guilford held the edge on corner kicks, 4-2.

Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) made one save in net for the Quakers. McFarlane made five stop in net for the Tigers. All saves for both goalkeepers occurred in the first half.

Guilford enjoys a week away from the pitch before returning to action next Saturday for at 3 p.m. ODAC contest at Washington and Lee University.
