College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Sits 10th After Two Rounds of Gordin Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Guilford College shot 305-289-594 in Monday’s first two rounds of the Gordin Classic at the Columbus Country Club. The Quakers sit 19 strokes behind tournament leader Berry College, which shot one-under 575 to take a one-stroke lead over Wittenberg University in the 12-team field. Rhodes College (578) is three strokes off the pace and two shots ahead of fourth-place Methodist University.

The Quakers bounced back from an opening-round 305 in the morning with a 289, the second-round’s fourth-best score. Rookie Justin Perdue shaved 10 strokes off his first-round 77 with a five-under 67 that moved him into 11th place in the 60-man field with an even-par 144. Teammate Ty Palmer also shares 11th place after shooting 74-70-144 Monday. Both Quakers sit six strokes behind tournament leader Corey Haas of St. John Fisher College. Haas scorched the par-72, 7,010-yard course with a 68 and 70 for a six-under 138. Haas has a three-stroke edge over a trio comprised of Jackson Collier (Methodist University), Alec Davis (Rhodes College) and MarkDavid Wright (Wittenberg).

Guilford sophomore Harrison Frye rebounded from a first-round 81 by shooting a 73 in the afternoon, which helped him into a share of 44th place at 154. Teammate Aaron Abts (75-80-155) is one stroke behind in 46th. Guilford’s Tanner Gross shot 79-79-158 and is in 51st.

The tournament is named for longtime Ohio Wesleyan University golf coach Dick Gordin and ends Tuesday with 18 holes. The annual event features eight of the top-15 teams in this week’s Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head Rankings and eight of the top-15 teams in the Bushnell Golfweek Division III Coaches’ Poll. Guilford is ranked ninth by Golfstat and 12th in the coaches’ poll.
