Women’s Soccer Opens Pride Field In Victorious Fashion
GREENSBORO, NC – The Greensboro College women’s soccer played their inaugural game on the newly constructed Pride Field on Saturday afternoon as they hosted the Cougars of Averett University in a USA South Athletic Conference showdown. Greensboro was able to establish an early lead before going on to win by a 2-0 mark.
Greensboro got their first goal of the game in the 39th minute of play. Samara Alba struck a ball from just inside the offensive zone over the top and was able to find the foot of Melanie Raton to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.
Over the course on the final six minutes of the opening half, Greensboro would have even more opportunities to find the back of the net but they could not cash in as they took their one goal lead into the break.
After the intermission period, the Pride found the back of the net one final time following a penalty kick by Samara Alba just 13 minutes into the final stanza of play.
Averett then applied a lot of pressure over the final third of the second period, but goalkeeper Brittany Morrison was able to keep the shutout intact and preserve the 2-0 victory.
“Being able to play on our new turf field today was really exciting for us,” stated Head Coach Gus Mota. “That opportunity is a memory that will be everlasting. We were able to use that spark to turn in a solid performance, but we must now turn our attention to next week’s games.”
The Pride held a commanding advantage in the shot category, 25-12. Megan Cole recorded a team high seven shots while Lauren Greeson and Samara Alba also had several opportunities.
Brittany Morrison picked up the win in goal for Greensboro after stopping seven shots.
