Elon Women’s Basketball Releases Non-Conference Schedule

ELON, N.C. – Along with the previously released Colonial Athletic Association schedule, the Elon women’s basketball team has announced its non-conference slate for the 2015-16 season. The Phoenix will play a total of 11 non-conference games and one exhibition, including match ups against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference and Big 12 Conference.

After an exhibition against Winston-Salem State on Sunday, Nov. 8, in Alumni Gym, the Phoenix opens the season at home on Saturday, Nov. 14, against Lenoir-Rhyne in a 2 p.m. tip.

Elon plays its first road game of the season against the Liberty Flames on Monday, Nov. 16, in Lynchburg, Va. The Phoenix claimed a 73-62 victory over LU last season in Alumni Gym, renewing a series that hadn’t been played in over 10 years. The game will mark Elon’s first trip to Lynchburg since 2003.

The Phoenix returns home to host Charlotte on Thursday, Nov. 19, in only the third meeting between the two schools this century. Elon defeated the 49ers, 67-54, in Charlotte, N.C., a year ago after Charlotte took the win in the previous game in 2011.

Elon sets out on a road trip to the nation’s capital for its next game when it takes on American in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Eagles edged out the maroon and gold two years ago in Alumni Gym, leaving with a 69-68 win, and earning its first win in the series that includes three total games.

From D.C., the Phoenix heads to Annapolis, Md., to meet the Mids of the Naval Academy on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The all-time series between the programs is tied at one game each with both games played previously in Alumni Gym, including a 69-56 Elon win in 2014.

The maroon and gold closes out November after Thanksgiving at home on Sunday, Nov. 29, when it welcomes East Tennessee State. The Bucs won the last two games in the series with the most recent being played over 10 years ago.

December begins with a trip to face former Southern Conference opponent Furman in Greenville, S.C., on Saturday, Dec. 5. The Phoenix claimed a 10-point victory, 81-71, over the Paladins in Elon last year after FU had claimed the three previous meetings.

On Sunday, Dec. 13, Elon goes to Raleigh, N.C., for the fourth straight season to face ACC foe NC State. The Phoenix has never beaten the Wolfpack in its eight attempts. The game will be played at Broughton High School as NCSU’s home facility, Reynolds Coliseum, undergoes renovations.

Elon plays its final home non-conference game of the season in Alumni Gym on Saturday, Dec. 19, against local rival High Point. The Panthers overcame a six-point deficit at the half last year to take an 87-71 win over the Phoenix in High Point, N.C. The game marks the 76th all-time meeting between the schools. Elon has not claimed a win since 2003 with HPU claiming six straight since then.

The last game before the Christmas holiday for the Phoenix comes on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at South Carolina. Elon opened the 2012-13 season against the Gamecocks, who advanced all the way to the national semifinals a year ago, in Columbia, S.C., while this game marks the third overall meeting. The game in 2012 marked only the first win for USC as the maroon and gold leads, 2-1, in the all-time series. This is the fourth straight year Elon plays a SEC opponent.

Elon continues play against the power conferences when it closes out 2015 at Big 12 opponent West Virginia on Monday, Dec. 28, in Morgantown, W.Va. The Phoenix and the Mountaineers, who lost in the WNIT championship last year, have played three times since 2010 with WVU claiming the win each time.

The Phoenix begins the 2016 portion of its season and CAA play on Sunday, Jan. 3, at UNCW in Wilmington, N.C.

Season tickets for the 2015-16 season are on sale now and are the only way to guarantee your seat in Alumni Gym this season. To purchase season tickets, call the Elon Athletics Ticket Office at 336-278-6750.
