Drexel’s Overtime Goal Downs Elon Women’s Soccer 2-1

PHILADELPHIA – Vanessa Kara scored the game-winning goal in the 104th minute for the Dragons as the Elon University women’s soccer team fell to Drexel 2-1 in two overtimes on Sunday, Oct. 18, at Vidas Field.

With the loss, Elon falls to 9-5-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the CAA this season. Drexel improves to 8-8-0 overall and 2-5 in conference play with the win.

Highlights
In the first half Drexel outshot the Phoenix 9-2 but the score remained deadlocked at 0-0. Tori Baliatico had the best chance for Elon in the 43rd minute as she found herself free on the back post on a corner. Her shot missed just to the right of the post.

Elon took the advantage in the second half. The Phoenix struck first in the 59th minute as Grace Bennett placed a shot into the top right corner for her first of the season to give Elon a 1-0 lead.

Vanessa Kara leveled the score 1-1 in the 70th minute as she tapped in a deflected shot that rolled past Taylor Mohr. The Dragons continued to apply the pressure, but the score remained tied to send the match to overtime.

Drexel’s heavy pressure in overtime would pay off. Kara scored the game-winner in the 104thminute for the Dragons and her second overtime goal led Drexel to the 1-0 victory over Elon.

Baliatico had a great chance on a breakaway, just seconds before Drexel’s game-winner, but her attempt went wide of the left post. The Dragons outshot the Phoenix 30-7 overall in the match.
