Tye Leads HPU Men’s Golf At The Phoenix Invitational

• Senior McKay Tye notched a first round score of 73 and posted a 36-hole total of 148 to sit t-28th
• High Point notched a two-round score of 622 and resides in 15th place
• The Panthers take on round three tomorrow with an 8 a.m. shotgun start

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team wrapped up the first day of the Elon Phoenix Invitational Monday with a combined score of 622 (317-305). The Panthers currently reside in 15th place.

“We had a slow beginning to the day, but greatly improved within the second round,” head coach Greg Flesher. said “McKay Tye had a great start to the day in the first round and finished strong in the second. We are ready to come out tomorrow and work on our course management and putting to improve as much in the third round as we did in the second.”

Tye, a senior, leads the Panthers with a 36-hole score of 148 (73-75) and sits t-28th. Tye registered 23 pars, three birdies and an eagle after two rounds.

Davis Kiger, a freshman, opened with a first round score of 78 but improved upon that score by three strokes to post a 36-hole total of 153 (78-75). Kiger currently sits t-55th. Sophomore Emile Menard posted a two-round score of 157 (78-79) and currently is t-77th.

Sophomore Connor Alexander and redshirt-senior AJ Hopkins notched matching two-round scores of 166. Alexander (89-77) and Hopkins (88-78) both sit t-90th.

East Carolina currently holds the tournament lead with a combined score of 564. Elon (575), VCU (578), Charleston Southern (578) and Gardner-Webb (587) round off the top-5.

The squad will take on final round action tomorrow at Alamance Country Club with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
