Elon Women’s Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking 1-0 Overtime Loss at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Allison Bordell scored a header for the Dukes with six seconds left on the clock in overtime as the Elon University women’s soccer team fell in a heartbreaker 1-0 to James Madison in overtime on Friday, Oct. 25, at University Park.

Elon falls to 9-6-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the CAA this season. James Madison improves to 11-6-1 and 5-2-1 in conference play with the win.

The score was all-square at 0-0 heading into halftime. The Dukes led 11-5 in the shot count, but both teams had some great chances in the half.

Both of the best opportunities of the half came in the last five minutes. James Madison’s best chance of the half came in the 43rd minute when Rachel Ivey’s shot rattled off the post.

Tori Baliatico had a good chance in the final 10 seconds stealing the ball from the Dukes’ center back, but Ellen Forrest came up with a nice diving save to keep the match scoreless at the half.

In the second half, Baliatico continued to be a force up top. She had a goal waved off in the 69th minute because of a handball. The freshman took a breakaway and her initial shot was saved. Her hand touched the ball as she tried to control the rebound and her finish was called off.

Both teams couldn’t find the net in the second half and the match would head to overtime. The Dukes led the Phoenix 22-13 in shots at the end of regulation. Elon had more chances on goal, forcing Ellen Forrest to make four saves in the half.

Alexis de Groot had the first chance in overtime, but a defender blocked her shot inside the box in the 96th minute. With six seconds remaining in the first overtime, Bordell’s header for the Dukes found the bottom right corner of the net for the game-winner.

The Phoenix are currently five points out of sixth. They need to finish in the top six to make the CAA conference tournament.
Elon needs to win its final two matches and help from Hofstra, Northeastern and UNCW to make the conference tournament.
