DEFENDING SINGLES CHAMP HAYNES OF ASHEVILLE MOVES CLOSER TO 3-A CHAMPIONSHIP

BURLINGTON – Defending singles champion Adrienne Haynes of Asheville had two convincing victories on Friday and moved closer to another title in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Haynes dropped only one game in four sets to move into a Saturday morning semifinal against Lauren Scism of Shelby Crest. In the other semifinal, Sarah Jiang of Cox Mill, the state singles runner-up in both 2012 and ’13, faces West Henderson’s Savannah Smith.

Asheville also advanced the doubles team of Kristie Kim and Mary Hamrick into the semifinals, with the duo’s opening round win a tough three-set victory over Ellen Yu and Joy Stouffer of Chapel Hill.
