GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kamerin Williams recorded her first double double of the season Tuesday as the Greensboro College women’s basketball team (1-1) defeated Salem College, 71-68.
Greensboro used a 7-0 run to jump out to a 7-2 lead in the first period. Alexis Hite got the run started with a three-pointer before Jada Peterson capped it off with two free throws.
Late in the second period, the Spirits used a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 30-27.
However, Hite connected with her second three-ball at the horn, tying the game at 30 at the half.
The two teams then traded the advantage until Salem established its largest lead of the game at 68-62 with just over four minutes to play.
The Pride then used a 9-0 run to secure the victory. Hite recorded five points during the run, while Jada Peterson, Williams, and Marla Crawford each accounted for at least one point.
“We came up with some big stops and buckets as the time ran down,” Williams said. “As a team we had to pick up our intensity, and we were able do that down the stretch to come up with the win.”
Williams finished with 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, while Hite and Courtney Pearsal recorded 12 points each. Marla Crawford recorded 11 to go along with nine assists.
“I was happy to come away with the win as Salem played really good and knocked down some big shots,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “We have a very tough weekend ahead of us, and we are going to continue going hard as we go throughout the season.”
The women’s basketball team will return to the court at 5 p.m. Saturday against Otterbein University in the Pat Deacon Classic, hosted by Transylvania University. For more information on the Pride women’s basketball team, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
