Elon Track & Field Phoenix Splits for Pair of Meets This Weekend

ELON, N.C. – For the first time this indoor season, the Elon University women’s track and field team will split for a pair of meets this weekend, Jan. 29-30, as majority of the athletes will compete at the Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast Track Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C., while select others will travel to Liberty University to the Darius Dixon Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.

Phoenix Prelims
• Elon will compete at the JDL Fast Track Complex for the fourth and final time this season. Each of the Phoenix’s previous meets this year have taken place inside the facility with the maroon and gold earning a pair of team titles at the JDL Kickoff Classic (Dec. 5) and the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge (Jan. 24).
• Making the trek to the Darius Dixon Invitational will be sophomore Emily Dixon, who will compete in the pentathlon, and rookie Nicole Karabas, who will partcipate in the pole vault on Friday, Jan. 29.
• At the Camel City Invitational, 29 athletes will be in competition at the two-day meet for the Phoenix. A number of athletes from the distance group will make their indoor season debut at the meet while members of the Elon men’s cross country team will also race at the meet.
• Senior Jen Esposito will look to continue her blazing start to the 2015-16 indoor season. The Mansfield, Mass., native has qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championships (ECAC) in the 400-meters, 500-meters, 800-meters and also as a member of the 4×400-meter relay.
• Sydney Griffin also has had a hot start on the track with a new personal and school record time in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.49. She also has the Phoenix’s best performance this season in the 200-meter dash at 24.73 and has qualified for the ECACs in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 200-meters.
• Junior Carrie Abraham qualified for the ECACs last week after leaping a personal-best mark of 39’ 3.25” (11.97m) in the triple jump at the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge. That mark is now also the second-best indoor performance in school history.
• Joining Esposito at the ECACs in the 4×400-meter relay is Lydia Laws, Lauren Brzozowski and Desiree Ross. The quartet clocked a time of 3:54.07 at the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge – the fourth-best mark in school history.

Last Time Out
The maroon and gold captured its second indoor team title of the season with its victory last Sunday, Jan. 24, at the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge. Elon took team honors and outscored other notable schools such as Wake Forest, Campbell, Davidson, USC Upstate and host UNCG in dual meet competition.

Individually, Elon won six event titles at the meet. Griffin took medalist honors in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. The Marietta, Ga., native ran a time of 8.68 in the 60-meter hurdles and followed with a 25.20 in the 200-meter dash.

Esposito won the 800-meter race with her time of 2:13.04 – the second-best indoor performance in school history. Esposito, Laws, Brzozowski and Ross also took the 4×400-meter relay crown with their time of 3:54.07.

Abraham earned the triple jump title at the meet after setting her new personal-best mark of 39′ 3.25″ (11.97m). Brzozowski rounded out the Phoenix winners with her victory in the 400-meter dash and her time of 59.22.

After a week off, Elon returns to the track to compete at the Spire Institute Division I Challenge on Feb. 12, in Geneva, Ohio.
