CHAPEL HILL – Que Tucker, Commissioner of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced today that James Alverson will be joining the the NCHSAA as an Assistant Commissioner. Alverson will be replacing recently retired Rick Strunk after his 30-year tenure ended in December.

Alverson has spent the last eight years at Capitol Broadcasting Company in their Sports Radio division, where he held the title of Assistant Program Director after working his way up through the company from part-time promotions assistant to on-air and producer roles at the station. His experience also includes radio and television broadcasting, as play-by-play and color analyst for sports ranging from football and basketball to baseball, soccer, lacrosse and softball.

Alverson’s job duties will include media relations, publications, such as championship game programs, and overseeing special events like NCHSAA Day and the NCHSAA Hall of Fame.

“I am very excited and pleased that James accepted our offer to join the NCHSAA staff. While we had some outstanding applicants, James’ varied media experiences were impressive and fit the requirements we had established for the position. He will be a great addition and our entire staff is excited to begin working with him,” said NCHSAA Commissioner, Que Tucker.

“I’m very grateful for my years at Capitol Broadcasting,” said Alverson. “Those years not only prepared me for the new role I’ll be stepping into at the NCHSAA, but helped me to cultivate a great passion for high school athletics. I know the exceptional job Rick Strunk did in this role during his time with the Association, and I know I have big shoes to fill. I’m excited to get to work with the great people in and around the NCHSAA.”

A graduate of North Carolina State University, Alverson is the 2015 recipient of NCHSAA’s Tim Stevens State Media Representative of the Year award. He and his wife, Sarah, make their home in Raleigh.
