Men’s Basketball Wins Double Overtime Thriller At Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Greensboro College men’s basketball team won a double-overtime thriller at Methodist University Saturday, 113-105.

Methodist (7-13, 3-6 USA South) jumped out to a 20-5 lead before the Pride (13-8, 7-3 USA South) used a 10-6 run to pull within 24-15. Donavan Griffith, who tallied 20 points in the game, accounted for seven of the points, while Parris Scales recorded the other three.

Greensboro then pulled within 37-32 after a Simeon Howard layup before going into halftime trailing 49-43.

After intermission, the Pride pulled to within one point before the Monarchs extended their lead back to double figures at 71-60.

The Pride trailed 85-71 with three minutes left in regulation before they used a 19-8 run to tie the game at 90 with 15 seconds left. Joseph Gatling and Howard each scored eight points during the run.

The two teams each scored 10 points in the first overtime before the Pride pulled away late in the second overtime to secure the victory.

“This was an awesome win for our players and staff as we all showed a lot of heart and determination,” Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. “Both Simon and Joseph were excellent tonight, and Hamilton did an unbelievable job on defense and controlling the offense. On the defensive side, Donavan showed he can certainly be a game changer. …

“Our players, staff, and athletic trainer never gave up. I am extremely proud of everyone who wore a Greensboro College basketball uniform tonight. Wow!”

Gatling finished with a team-high 33 points, while Howard recorded 29 points. Parris Scales finished with 20 points. Hamilton Hawkins, passed for a team-high 11 assists, tying the school’s single-game assist record.

Women’s Basketball Sails Past Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. – The Greensboro College women’s basketball team breezed past the Squirrels of Mary Baldwin College Saturday, 82-50.

The Pride (11-8, 7-3 USA South) opened the game on an 18-2 run and did not look back. Monica Smalls recorded six points during the span, while Courtney Pearsall, Marla Crawford, Bryanna Stanton, and Domonique McCoy tallied at least one bucket.

After leading 41-14 after the first period, Greensboro established its largest lead of the first half at 35-8, following a Stanton layup, before taking a 41-14 lead into halftime.

Greensboro opened the third period on a 12-3 run to gain its largest lead at 55-18, following a pair of free throws by Shamara Richardson. Alexis Hite, Heather Burton, Crawford, and Pearsall each scored one basket during the run.

The Squirrels (0-19, 0-11 USA South) got no closer than 31 for the remainder of the game as the Pride secured the victory.

“All the girls played hard tonight, and it was a much-needed win for us,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “After being on the road for the past four games, it is going to be nice returning home.”

All 14 players on the Greensboro College roster scored at least one basket. Alexis Hite, who recorded a team-high 12 points, was the lone Pride player to record double digits. Smalls finished with nine points, while Crawford, Burton, Pearsall, and Stanton each tallied eight points. Smalls pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds, while Crawford passed for a team-leading six assists.

Pride Baseball Drops Two On Opening Day

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team dropped a double-header to Covenant College Saturday to open its 2016 season.

The Pride (0-2) fell 10-4 in the first game before dropping a 9-4 decision in the second game.

In the first game, Covenant (2-0) held a 10-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning.

Andrew Hernandez led off the bottom half of the fifth with a single before James Wilkins reached on a fielder’s choice. One batter later, Mac Graham loaded the bases with a one-out single.

Following a Brandon Soden strikeout, Brian Robbett walked to push Greensboro’s first run of the game across the plate. Zach Neumiester, who recorded a team-high three hits, plated two more runs with a single to right field.

J.P Lisk then pushed the game’s last run across with his first hit of the game.

Dustin Minnick took the loss after surrendering nine runs, six of which were earned, in 4 1/3 innings. Josh Evans tossed the remainder of the seven-inning game and gave up one unearned run.

The Pride then jumped out on top early in the second game with one run in the bottom of the first inning when Brian Robbett scored Graham from third base with a single.

Covenant then scored six runs to take a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning, when Greensboro scored twice to pull within 6-3.

The Pride then pulled within 6-4 but could not get any closer, falling 9-4.

Mac Graham and James Wilkins each recorded two hits in the second game, while Lisk, Robbett, and Soden each tallied one hit.
