EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry College’s Megan Jacoby posted a double-double 20 points and 10 assists as Guilford College fell in a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest against Emory & Henry, 83-67.
Emory & Henry (18-6, 11-4 ODAC) held a 9-6 lead after the first four minutes of a high-scoring first quarter. Both offenses exploded in the latter part of the period as Emory & Henry produced a 12-5 run over the final 3:02 of the period to claim an eight-point lead. The Wasps shot 55 percent to open the contest while the Quakers (18-4, 12-3 ODAC) shot 46.7 percent. Guilford pulled within one with 8:21 left in the second quarter, but the Wasps extended their lead to 15 points, their largest of the first half, with a 12-0 run spanning a 3:02 stretch late in the quarter.
The Quakers cut the deficit to nine points four times in the third quarter and once cut the Wasps’ lead down to seven, but Emory & Henry held their advantage by holding the Quakers to 33.3 percent shooting. The Wasps’ offense responded by shooting 41.2 percent. Jacoby’s free throws with 39 seconds left in the final quarter sealed the Wasps’ largest lead, 16 points, as the hot shooting Wasps earned the victory.
Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) claimed her 12th double-double of the season with 24 points on ten-of-17 shooting while pulling down 15 rebounds and adding three steals. Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) was the remaining Quakers’ player in double-figure scoring, posting 13 points on six-of-13 shooting.
Four other Wasps posted double-figure scoring, including Karina Farr’s 16 points on seven-of-12 shooting. Tamara Brewster and Tess Johnson each came off the bench to score 14 points.
The Quakers shot 37.5 percent for the contest thanks to shooting above 40 percent for the first two quarters. The Wasps shot 49.2 percent from the field, shooting 50 percent or better for three out of four quarters. The Quakers shot 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from three-point range while Emory & Henry shot 41.2 percent (seven-of-17) from beyond the arc.
The Quakers out-rebounded the Wasps, 42-36, and beat Emory & Henry on the offensive glass, 13-6, and earned the edge in second-chance points, 12-7. Emory & Henry forced 19 Guilford turnovers and produced 18 points off those miscues. Guilford produced 12 points off 16 Emory & Henry turnovers. The Wasps’ offensive held the lead in points in the paint, 44-24.
The Quakers close out the regular season Saturday, hosting Virginia Wesleyan College for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
