College Baseball Final – Guilford 21, Bluefield State 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Parks Smithey and Palmer Phillips combined on a two-hit shutout in Guilford College’s 21-0 baseball win over visiting Bluefield State College Saturday.

The Big Blues (0-7) loaded the bases with one out thanks to some early wildness by Smithey (1-2), but the senior got a foul out and a fly out to retire the side.

The Quakers (4-3) took advantage of the first two of six Bluefield State errors in the bottom of the inning and scored twice. The errors, combined with 10 walks, six wild pitches and four hit batsmen by Big Blues pitchers enabled Guilford to score in all but the third inning.

Josh Shepherd and Logan Jones hit RBI doubles in the Quakers’ seven-run sixth frame. Guilford batted around and had six of its 17 hits in the inning.

Smithey carried a no hitter into the seventh inning before Boston New beat out an infield single. Smithey fanned the inning’s final two batters and gave way to Phillips after a season-high seven frames.

Six Quakers had at least two hits, including freshman Andrew Brann, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Brett Shapcott did not have a hit, but walked twice and plated three runs. Jones, A.J. Girting and Jacob Roberts each had two hits and two RBI. Joe Metts slammed his first college home run with a lead-off shot to right-center in the seventh inning.

Guilford is scheduled to host Methodist University Tuesday (2/23) at 2:30 p.m.
