College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Sewanee 7, Guilford 6

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Robbie Berndt scored three times in the University of the South’s six-goal second quarter, which helped host Sewanee past Guilford College, 7-6, in men’s lacrosse action Sunday.

The Quakers (0-1) grabbed a 2-0 first-quarter lead on tallies by Cam Davis and Dylan Haupt, but the Tigers (2-0) responded with six goals in the decisive second stanza. Berndt’s first score tied the game at 2-2 10:10 before halftime. Pat DiMento broke the deadlock a little over two minutes later and Berndt followed with two unassisted scores 66 seconds apart that opened a three-goal Sewanee edge. Peter Brown’s closed the spurt and sent the hosts into halftime with a 6-2 lead.

Guilford’s Adam Fiore and Zachary Berkowitz scored man-up goals in the third quarter and pulled the Quakers to within 7-4 entering the final quarter. Haupt netted Guilford’s third extra-man tally 5:32 into the period and Fiore scored his second goal with 6:29 left in regulation, which made it a 7-6 game.

Guilford won the ensuing face-off and got two shots off, including Andrew McDonagh’s, which was stopped by Tigers’ goalie Selby Austin. The teams traded possessions for the remainder of the game. Sewanee picked up a Guilford turnover in the final minute and successfully ran out the clock.

The Quakers held a 37-36 edge in shots and picked up 22 of 41 ground balls in the tightly contested affair. Guilford’s extra-man offense converted on three of four chances, all in the second half. Fiore scored three points on two goals and an assist. Haupt also had two goals for Guilford. Parker Styles made his college debut in goal and recorded 10 saves. Andrew McDonagh picked up a game-high five ground balls.

Berndt’s three goals led all scorers. DiMentro added two goals and an assist for Sewanee. Austin made nine saves in goal. Ryan Stubits won nine of the game’s 16 face-offs and had three ground balls.

Coach Tom Carmean’s Quakers visit Greensboro College Wednesday (2/24) at 3:30 p.m.
