Game Report on Southwest Guilford-Myers Park Boys Basketball:Cowboys ride Mustangs right out of Round One and SWG moves to Round Two

Southwest Guilford 88, Myers Park 67
The Cowboys of Southwest played hosts to the Mustangs of Myers Park in the opening round of the 4A State Playoffs tonight. The Cowboys are looking to make some noise in this State Tournament but must first get past a long and athletic bunch from the Charlotte area, which has in recent years been a stumbling block for Southwest.

The Cowboys seemed to come right out of the gate with determination to break that streak of first round exits the past few seasons. A made three pointer on the opening possession gave Southwest the lead for good on the night. A steal and layup just seconds later put the Cowboys up 5-0 just 45 seconds into the game. The Mustangs got on the board on their next trip down, but the Cowboys put together 12 straight points to take an early 17-2 lead at the 3:30 mark. The remainder of the frame was about even as the Mustangs closed the frame with a made three pointer taking the tally to 25-11.

The Cowboys maintained pressure and control of the first half as the second quarter saw the margin slowly expand until the opening half closed at 50-26 in favor of the Cowboys.

The second half had some more aggression by the Mustangs, but every time they tried to put some possessions together, the Cowboys were able to tame the Mustangs and keep the margin just too wide. The third frame closed at 70-44.

The final stanza was a fouled filled affair as the Mustangs attempted to slow the game down and chop their way back into it. In the end however, the margin was too wide and the Cowboys went 16 of 18 from the charity stripe to keep the lead insurmountable to the tune of a 88-67 first round win.
The Mustangs were led by Davrion Grier with 26 points.

Southwest got back to their winning ways by once again being led by an all around balanced attack with all 5 starters in double figures and a whole team effort.

Kameron Langley finished with 20 points, 5 Rebs, 5 Asts, and 3 Stls. Kobe Langley had 18 points, 5 Asts, 4 Rebs, and 2 Stls. Keyshaun Langley finished with 14 points, 6 Asts, and a Steal. Kaymon Mitchell finished with 14 points, 3 Rebs, 2 Asts, and 2 Stls. Orlando Smith also finished with 11 points, 3 Rebs, and an assist.
The Cowboys advance to the second round of the state playoffs to play the winner of Alexander Central and Davie County on Thursday night.
