College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 86, Randolph-Macon 67

SALEM, Va. – Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor) scored 16 points and Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie County (Pfieffer)) added 15 in Guilford College’s 86-67 win over Randolph-Macon College in Wednesday’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Basketball Tournament quarterfinal in the Salem Civic Center.

The second-seeded Quakers (20-4) advance to Saturday’s (2/28) 3:00 p.m. semifinal against the winner of Thursday’s final quarterfinal contest between number-three Emory & Henry College and sixth-seeded Bridgewater College.

Guilford shot a season-high 50.8 percent from the floor and made 50% (5-10) of its three-pointers, also a season best. The Quakers shot over 57 percent from the floor in the second half and outscored the Yellow Jackets, 48-34, in that time.

The first half featured all of the game’s four ties and seven lead changes. The Quakers struggled to defend the Yellow Jackets’ Katie Anderson (19) and Hannah Livermon (10), who combined for 29 of Randolph-Macon’s 33 first-half points. Steller made all three three-point shots for nine points and Weatherly added eight in the opening half, despite two fouls. Guilford’s Heaven Walters (Yadkinville, N.C./Starmount) caught an errant Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) three-pointer and scooped the ball over her shoulder at the buzzer to send the Quakers into the half with a 38-33 lead.
A 14-4 Guilford run over the second half’s first four minutes opened a 52-37 edge. Randolph-Macon could only get back to within 12 points the rest of the way as the Quakers opened the fourth quarter on a 12-2 spurt that featured consecutive three-pointers by Kate Clark and Steller.

Essence Abraham (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) scored 13 points and had a team-high three assists off the bench. Teammate Jordyn Brown added 11 points and four boards in 15 productive minutes, which helped the Quakers’ reserves outscore their counterparts, 28-13. Ramsey finished with 13 points and three assists as Guilford put a season-high five students in double-figure scoring. Weatherly’s 10 rebounds helped the Quakers win the battle of the boards, 41-32, and secure her team-leading 13th double-double of the season. Walters chipped in seven points, seven rebounds and three assists for Guilford.

Anderson’s 30 points and 11 rebounds led all players. Livermon finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, but only scored two second-half points. The Yellow Jackets shots 39.7% from the floor and turned the ball over 15 times, which led to 17 Quakers’ points.
