College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Meredith 18, Guilford 9

RALEIGH, N.C. – Meredith College’s Julie Capretti totaled seven points as Guilford College dropped a windy Thursday evening contest to Meredith, 18-9.

After Meredith claimed a 2-1 lead after the first six minutes of the opening half, Guilford’s Amanda Dionne sparked a four-goal rally for the Quakers by scoring three consecutive goals over an 8:14 stretch as Guilford claimed three-goal lead. The first half featured two stretches of over five minutes without a goal in a defensive-minded first half.

Meredith closed the first half with a three-goal rally in the final three minutes to tie the game at halftime. Meredith’s rally continued into the second half, as the Avenging Angels took advantage of two Guilford yellow cards to score three goals with the Quakers at least one player down, one with two players down, to widen the lead and cap their nine-goal rally spanning a 10:23 span over both halves. Guilford responded with four goals over the rest of the half, but the Avenging Angels methodically widened their lead over the rest of the half to claim the victory.

Dionne led the Quakers with four goals and one assist while claiming four draw controls. Marina Bailey scored two goals and collected a game-high seven ground balls while causing four Meredith turnovers. Summer Fowler led the defense with five caused turnovers.

Capretti totaled four goals and three assists while Victoria Doyle led Meredith goal-scorers with five goals and one assist while claiming four draw controls. Four Avenging Angels total five or more points.

Meredith held the edge on shots, 44-18, while claiming the advantage on draw controls, 19-9. The Quakers finished 20-of-25 on clears while the Avenging Angels finished 12-of-13 while completing all five second-half clears. The Quakers finished four-of-six on free-position shots, including three-for-three in the second half, while Meredith finished four-of-eight.

Sammi Milbourn made 15 saves in net for the Quakers, earning the start. Sarah Sedaghat (0-1) made two saves in play the first 4:31 of the second half. Katherine Sills made five stops in net for Meredith.

The Quakers (1-1) return home Sunday, facing Mary Washington University for a 4 p.m. contest.
