Scales Hits Last Second Basket To Lift Pride Men Past Piedmont

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Parris Scales recorded the game-winning layup with 5 seconds left as the Pride men’s basketball team defeated Piedmont College 77-75 in the opening round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

Greensboro (16-10) used a 7-0 run to gain a 7-2 lead. Hamilton Hawkins opened the run for the Pride before Simeon Howard capped it off with an old-fashioned three-point play.

Piedmont then tied the game at 11 before pulling out in front 25-18.

After the Lions established their largest lead at 44-35, Greensboro pulled within seven by haftime.

Piedmont held onto its advantage until the Pride went on a 17-7 run to pull out in front 61-58. David Leaman, who tied his career-high 10 points, jumpstarted the run before Howard tailed nine points, while Hawkins and Zedric Barnett added at least one point each.

“I was very proud of David (Leaman) today as he was a huge spark off the bench,” Head Coach Bryan Galuski said.

The Pride then extended their margin to five before the Lions tied the game once again at 70.

With Greensboro leading by three, Justin Vallejo drained a long three-pointer to tie the game before Scales put the Pride on top for good.

Piedmont had one final look to send the game into overtime, but the layup at the buzzer rimmed out.

“We found a way to win today,” Galuski said. “We have to be better tomorrow, but I am excited we are advancing. This was a team win”

Howard recorded a team-high 18 points, while Joseph Gatling joined Leaman with 10 points. Gatling, Scales, and Donavan Griffith each pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Last Second Shot Ends Women’s Basketball Season

MARYVILLE, Tn. – The Greensboro College women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaker, 56-54, to LaGrange College Thursday in the first round of the USA South Women’s Basketball Tournament.

LaGrange raced out to an 11-5 lead before the Pride used a 8-0 run to pull ahead 13-11. Courtney Pearsall got the run started before Alyssa Carbone drained two three-pointers,

After trading baskets, the Pride took a 17-16 lead into the second period following a Monica Smalls layup.

The Panthers then regained a two-point lead midway into the period, but the Pride established a 29-24 lead, following a 7-0 run, before going into halftime up 32-26.

Alexis Hite gave Greensboro its largest lead of the game just 40 seconds into the third period before the Panthers pulled to within 42-40 following a 7-0 run.

LaGrange scratched its way back to within 46-45 but Greensboro responded with an 8-0 spurt, extending its lead back out to nine. Heather Burton, Marla Crawford, and Carbone each recorded a basket during the run.

But over the final five minutes, the Panthers outscored the Pride 11-0 to secure the win.

Carbone finished with a team-high 11 points, while Smalls tallied 10 points. Courtney Pearsall pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while Crawford passed for seven assists.

Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Guilford College

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s lacrosse team could not overcome a slow start, falling 10-7 Thursday to Guilford College.

The Quakers (1-1) tallied six unanswered goals to open the game before the Pride (1-2) could score.

Gianni Gonzalez, who recorded a team-high three goals, scored the Pride’s first goal before Guilford struck again to keep the six-goal margin.

Tamarie Sterling and Dennis Radcliffe each tallied one goal in the second period, but the Pride went into halftime down 8-3.

Greensboro opened the third quarter with three straight goals before the Quakers went into the final period up 10-6. Gonzalez tallied two man-up goals, while Jonathan Avedsian added the third.

Charles Stringfellow took a feed from Lamar Jelks just 10 seconds into the final period and beat the Guilford goalkeeper, but the Pride could not get any closer.

Despite making 15 saves, Ethan Danser took the loss in goal.

Men’s Basketball Places Four On All-Conference Teams

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Parris Scales, Simeon Howard, and Joseph Gatling were named to the USA South Men’s Basketball All-Conference Teams, the conference announced Wednesday.

Scales, a senior forward from Greensboro, N.C., was the Pride’s lone representative on the first team. Scales averaged 14.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while averaging 15.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game in conference play.

Howard, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., was named to the second team, while Gatling received honorable mention.

Howard led the Pride in scoring with 15.8 points per game, while averaging 7.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Gatling, a sophomore from Columbia, S.C., finished the regular season averaging 12 points per game.

Senior David Leaman of St. Petersburg, Fla., was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.

Pride Women Place Two On USA South All-Conference Teams

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Alexis Hite was named to the USA South All-Conference second team, while fellow senior Janae Gill-Woods was named to the conference’s All-Sportsmanship team, the conference announced Wednesday.

Hite, a Richmond, Va., , native, led the Pride in scoring with 11.6 points per game, while pulling down 3.5 rebounds per contest.

Gill-Woods, from Fort Washington, Md., played in 19 games this season.
