College Softball Finals – Guilford 11-11, Sweet Briar 0-0 (5 inn.)

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Guilford College’s softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Sweet Briar College Sunday afternoon. The Quakers (5-1) won both games in five innings by matching 11-0 scores in the Vixens’ (0-2) season openers.

Guilford took advantage of six first-inning walks in the opener and grabbed an early 4-0 lead. Guilford pitchers Makayla Carver (5), Casey Snead (4) and Maggie Shaffer (3) combined to strike out 15 of the 20 batters they faced in the five-inning contest. Carver worked the first two innings and earned her first college win. Snead had two hits and scored twice. Brooklyn Hopkins delivered a two-run double in the fifth inning. Sabrina Moreno, Jordan Starke and Laura Hall also had two RBI.

Erin Ogden had three hits, including a home run, and Calli Pastor added three hits in Guilford’s 11-0 win in the nightcap. Kailey Swaim went two-for-three with a two-run double in the first inning that keyed the Quakers’ eight-run frame. Pitchers Courtney Lackey and Haley Green (1-0) benefited from the outburst and combined on a one-hitter.

Coach Dennis Shores’ Quakers host Mary Baldwin College Wednesday (3/2) in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
