ELON, N.C. – Fresh off a three-game sweep of the La Salle Explorers, the Elon University baseball team will hit the road for a contest against the 16th-ranked East Carolina Pirates on Wednesday, March 2. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Series
Elon will be meeting East Carolina for the 75th time on the baseball diamond. The maroon and gold is 30-44-1 all-time against the Pirates. Last season, ECU took all four games against Elon, including a 7-0 contest in Greenville in May.

A Look at ECU
East Carolina entered the national polls this week, ranking as high as 16th in the D1Baseball.com poll. The Pirates are 6-1 after taking two-of-three at #4 Virginia last weekend. ECU also has three wins over Longwood and a victory over North Carolina A&T. Freshman outfielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton leads the Pirates at the plate, hitting .542 with four doubles, two triples, 10 runs scored and nine RBI in seven games. As a team, ECU is hitting .333 and has scored 52 runs. The pitching staff has compiled a 2.71 ERA and struck out 57 hitters in 63.0 innings of work.
Daniels Picks Up CAA Honor
Mason Daniels became the first Elon player to earn a weekly CAA honor this year by sharing Rookie of the Week accolades on March 1. Daniels threw 5.0 innings and recordied nine strikeouts to earn the first win of his career on Feb. 28. He surrendered just one unearned run on one hit and fanned two hitters in four of his five innings.

In the Feb. 28 victory over La Salle, Elon pitchers combined to strike out 18 Explorer hitters. Starter Mason Daniels fanned a career-high nine batters in 5.0 innings and Elon struck out at least one hitter in each inning. The last time an Elon team had posted at least 15 strikeouts in a game was May 7, 2013 when the maroon and gold fanned 16 against North Carolina A&T. The last time Elon had 18 strikeouts in a 9-inning game was March 30, 2007 against Davidson.
Picked Off
Thorugh eight games, Elon pitchers have picked off six base runners. Lefty Jordan Barrettleads the way with two, while Matt Harris, Dimitri Lettas, Derek Pike and Robbie Welhaf each have one. Last year, the Phoenix picked off a total of 7 runners, including two by a catcher.
On Deck
The Phoenix comes back home to Latham Park to host the Elon Invitational featuring Appalachian State, Bowling Green and Stony Brook. Elon plays on Friday, March 6, at 4:30 p.m. against Bowling Green and will then play Stony Brook at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and Appalachian State at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
