Danes Run Past Elon WLAX Phoenix in 12-4 Final

ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s lacrosse team was not able to overcome a slow start as the Phoenix fell in a 12-4 final to Albany tonight, March 4, at Rudd Field.

The Phoenix (4-2) finished with 21 total shots, 12 on goal, claimed the advantage in ground balls, 13-10, and finished 10-of-13 in clear attempts. Shelby Scanlin, Stephanie Asher, Kelsey Dupere and Sloane Kessler all contributed to the maroon and gold offense with one goal each, while Maeve Cowley tallied an assist. Scanlin also won a team-high two draws and picked up two ground balls in the game.

Elon goalie Rachel Ramirez took just her second loss on the season after seven saves and tallied two caused turnovers and a game-high four ground balls.

The Great Danes (1-1) just outshot the Phoenix with 22 shots, won the advantage at the draw, 10-7, and finished 14-of-15 in clear attempts. Julie Cryderman led all players with four goals followed by three goals and one assist by Dakotah Savitcheff. Courtney Henderson was credited with the win after eight saves in the game.

The Great Danes got off to a hot 6-0 start, including two goals each by both Savitcheff and Cryderman, by the 7:40 mark in the first half.

A free-position goal by Scanlin got the Phoenix on the board with 4:48 remaining on the clock. Bridget Lamb won the following draw, allowing Asher to score with under four minutes left in the half to pull the maroon and gold within four, 6-2. UA netted another score before the break to take a 7-2 advantage after the first frame.

Both defenses played strong to start the second half with no score change for nearly 15 minutes. The Danes tallied two more goals to move in front by seven, 9-2, with 12:06 on the clock.

With 6:54 remaining, Ramirez recorded a caused turnover and claimed a ground ball that allowed the Phoenix to clear the ball and get a free-position opportunity. Kessler notched a man-up free-position goal at the 5:55 mark to make it a 9-3 game.

The Danes held an 11-3 lead with under a minute to play as Scanlin claimed a draw that led to a Dupere goal off an assist from Cowley with just six ticks remaining. UA was able to get the ensuing draw and run down field for a goal as time expired for the final differential.
