WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Guilford College’s Sabrina Moreno totaled seven RBI over the Wednesday evening doubleheader with Salem College as the Quakers and Salem split the twinbill. Salem took the first game, 7-6, while Guilford claimed the nightcap, 10-5.
Guilford used a passed ball and an error to claim an early lead after one-half inning in game one before Salem used a pair of no-out doubles and a single to tie the contest after one inning. Both sides cashed in on two-out situations in the third inning with the Quakers loading the bases after scoring in the inning. The Quakers held off the Spirits after their rally by sitting down the Spirits with runners on first and second in the inning. Doubles lifted the Quakers in fifth and sixth innings as Laura Hall produced a two-out two-RBI double in the fifth to put the Quakers ahead and Anna Wolfe added an insurance run in the sixth, also with two-outs. Salem countered one half-inning later with a four-run, two-out rally, capped by a Logan Bowling three-run home run.
Salem claimed an early 3-1 lead after three innings as Salem stranded three Quakers on base in the first three frames. Moreno jumped the Quakers back in the contest in the top of the sixth inning with a two-run home run with two-outs to tie the game. Montana Lineberger reclaimed the lead for Salem in the next half-inning with a one-out double in an inning prolonged by back-to-back errors. Guilford stormed back in the top of the seventh stanza as Katy Holt led off the inning with a triple and scored in the next at-bat on a Laura Hall single. Moreno capped the rally with a two-out grand slam to put the game out of the Spirits’ reach.
Moreno finished three-for-eight with a double and two home runs while six of her seven RBI came in game two. Laura Hall finished four-for-five with three RBI and two stolen bases over the evening. Brooks Bray (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) finished four-for-eight over the doubleheader with a double while Shelby Helms drove in two runs in game two.
Jennifer Vitarelli finished four-for-eight for the Spirits with a double while Kierston Garner drove in two runs in game two.
Courtney Lackey (4-1) claimed the game-one loss for the Quakers, striking out six batters and walking one. Makayla Carver (2-1) earned the game-two complete-game win, striking out two and walking two.
Brianna Morris (5-1) took the game-one complete-game win for Salem, striking out three batters and walking one. Hannah Nolan (0-3) took the loss for Salem, throwing six-plus innings before being pulled with no outs in the seventh. She struck out one batter and was responsible for seven runs while Morris, who entered in the game for the final inning, was charged with three runs.
The Quakers (9-3) return home Saturday, hosting Southern Virginia University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Guilford’s Score for the Cure doubleheader.
